How Would You Make That? Paul McCarthy Sculptures

McCarthy blogThere is a chance that Paul McCarthy used a chisel to make these, but I doubt it.

When I saw these sculptures at Hauser & Wirth, I couldn’t help but think about how the hell he made these things. And I determined the first thing I would do is call this guy with his sweet 3D CNC Router:

I’m actually pretty sure that thing would be a total nightmare so I would probably end up calling a shop that has one of those and knows how to use it. Then I would find out what type of software I could use to make files that this crazy CNC machine could cut from, probably something like Auto CAD. Then I would buy some dwarf models on the internet and start mixing them together and make them look like they are puking.

The next step would be to figure out what material to use. Looking at this dwarf in the light makes me think its some fancy wood glued together:

I would go to a nice lumber yard and get the wood and start gluing it together:

I think then the blocks of wood could be fed through that CNC machine and cut into these sculptures. I bet after that there is a fair amount of sanding and the voila! Puking Cinderella in dazzling wood:
