Once upon a time, Marc Chagall packed up and went down to Mexico to make some costumes.
The designs are timeless and the execution of the costumes is startling. Check out this sketch and these crazy materials:
It feels like the spirit and culture of Mexico seeped into the work while he was down there making these costumes. Fishing towns and desert chicken coops infused with mythical import. I also love the way he painted directly on the fabric and then layered other materials over that. Look at the fish leg or these chicken hands:
In some of these photos you can see bits of skull and brain and blood – that’s not paint, that’s whats left of my exploded head from this exhibit. I loved it, I thought it was so wild and inspiring. I brought my parents too, but they didn’t seem as impressed:
